Prior to opening Donna Blackard Designs, a professional decorative and art studio, in 2002, Blackard worked on commissions in conjunction with a number of local decorative artists while attending classes at a Decorative Arts School. She has extensive education, training and professional experience in the area of faux finishing. Commissions range from decorative finishes on individual furniture pieces to mural projects such as the Colleton River Community Clubhouse on Hilton Head Island, and from faux finishes on a Memphis Redbirds stadium skybox to the restoration of the statuary and a portion of the decorative ceiling at St. Mary's Cathedral in Memphis.  The artist's work is currently being exhibited at galleries in a number of southeast cities including Memphis, Nashville, and Seaside, Florida. Blackard's work is all about layers and textures in both the physical and emotional dimensions.  The complexities of emotional and social experience find life on her canvas in the layers of paint, texture, glaze and varnish.  In Memphis, Blackard enjoys the opportunity to merge her impulses of creativity and philanthropy.  She has contributed work to a number of charitable events including The Heart Event for The Child Advocacy Center, the WKNO Art Auction, and The Art of Giving Event for Baptist Hospice.
